Prime Minister Theresa May said:
]]>
Zamsoe a small business from Padstow, Cornwall was one of 100 from around the country invited to Downing Street for a reception to mark the UK’s fourth annual Small Business Saturday on Saturday December 3rd.
Karen wanless, owner of Zamsoe, which designs and makes jewellery, joined other small business owners at a reception at No.10 Downing Street attended by the Small Business Minister Margot James.
Prime Minister Theresa May said:
“Small Business Saturday is an opportunity for us to celebrate the success of the UK’s 5.4 million small businesses - from family run restaurants, to innovative tech start-ups, to local corner shops.
I’m delighted that we had such a great representation of firms here in Downing Street to mark this event and recognise the prosperity they bring to the UK.”
Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greg Clark, said:
“The UK’s 5.5 million small businesses are the backbone of our economy, creating millions of jobs in communities across the country and helping to build an economy that works for all.
“I am proud to be joining Small Business Saturday in championing them, and would encourage as many people as possible to get out to their local high street this weekend to do the same.”
Small Business Saturday, a grassroots, not-for-profit campaign, places small, independent businesses in communities across the country in the national spotlight. Its aim is to prompt people not only to spend money with small independent businesses in the run-up to Christmas but also to create a mind-set to support them all year round.
It was a terrific end to 2016 for Zamsoe who looks forwards to launching new ranges and working with exciting retailers in 2017.

A small Padstow-based jewellery design business, whose collections of bracelets, brooches, necklaces and other jewellery for both women and men are inspired by the beautiful landscapes around its studio in Porthcothan Bay, Cornwall, has been named among the 100 small businesses in the UK to be celebrated by Small Business Saturday, the campaign that culminates in the UK’s dedicated day for small businesses on December 3rd.
Zamsoe was created officially two years ago by Karen Wanless, who moved from the North East to Cornwall after a decade of what she describes as 'playing' at doing business. The company designs, makes and sells distinctive jewellery, including innovative approaches like its ‘earrings in a bottle’ concept. From a small product range selling online the business has grown and is active on all the major online market places. It has also launched a wholesale business selling to more than 100 galleries and gift retailers across the UK and overseas. It will now be among the select number of companies to be featured by the Small Business Saturday campaign one per day for the 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday itself.
“The move from the North East to Cornwall was the catalyst to make Zamsoe a 'real' business,” explains Karen.
“Buying, giving or receiving little works of art should be an enjoyable pleasurable experience and gives you something special in today’s world of mass production. The culture and inspiring seaside and countryside of Cornwall is inspiring our new product ranges.”
Small Business Saturday is already the UK's most successful small business campaign. This is the fourth year of the campaign, which last year saw £623m spent with small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday, an increase of £119m or 24 per cent on the previous year. The campaign trended at number one in the UK on Twitter on the day with more than 100,000 campaign-related tweets being sent. Over 75% of local councils supported the campaign, giving considerable national reach into local communities.
The campaign is a great nationwide promotional and marketing tool for small businesses. It is totally free to participate and any small businesses can get involved - from one-man-bands, through to a high growth office, and from tradesmen to social media gurus. In addition to the big day, the campaign also delivers help and advice alongside opportunities to connect with other small businesses. In short, Small Business Saturday exists to support, inspire and promote small businesses.
“The British public has a great affection for small businesses and we continue
to see that grow year on year. Small Business Saturday is an exceptional example of collaboration and co-operation with small businesses teaming up in communities around the UK,” explains Campaign Director Michelle Ovens.
“Although the campaign focuses on one day, the goal is to have a lasting impact on small businesses by changing mind-sets, so that people make it their mission to support small businesses all year round. Most people in this country own a small business, work for a small business or know somebody who does, so supporting a small business on Small Business Saturday is absolutely personal.”
Small Business Saturday, which is a grassroots, not-for-profit campaign, was originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010 and it remains the principal supporter of the campaign in the UK, as part of its on-going commitment to encourage consumers to shop small. The campaign also benefits from the backing of leading business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses and Enterprise Nation. The campaign is also supported by PRS For Music, TalkTalk Business, Vistaprint, Post Office and Clear Channel
More information on Small Business Saturday can also be found on the Small Business Saturday Facebook page (www.facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturdayuk) and Twitter feed (@SmallBizSatUk) or their website www.smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com. If you would like more info on Zamsoe visit www.zamsoe.co.uk.
It’s the final, and a difficult farewell for audience members who have just one last chance (we’re not counting a couple of Christmas specials to come) to watch Mel, Sue, Mary and Paul, the original gang of four, as the show leaves the BBC.
But let’s try to forget that the most popular programme on British television has been dismantled overnight and turn our attention to the three remaining contestants.
They are an evenly matched little group and it’s a real seesaw of a last round, despite (gasp!) not one but TWO “Hollywood handshakes” very early on.
The showstopper is immense, comprising 49 different items and a lot of elements. “I’m expecting perfection,” says Paul Hollywood, as proud families, friends and other Bakers gather for a picnic and to watch the coronation of the winner.
What a shame its gone to pieces but lets enjoy the final.
See it tonight on BBC One, Wednesday 26 October at 8pm. The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice follows on BBC Two on Friday at 9.30pm.
If you think you will miss it too let us know and as a consolation remember it with one of our Baking Jewellery pieces http://zamsoe.co.uk/search?q=baking

]]>Callington Honey Fair is one of the largest street fairs in Cornwall, with hundreds of people visiting the town to enjoy the one day event. The modern-day fair is held annually on the first Wednesday in October and each year has a unique theme. That same theme is used for the Shop Window Competition and the Children's Art Competition, which attracts entries from eleven primary schools in the region.
What happens?
As the only town in Cornwall that still retains a Honey Fair, the streets of Callington are given over to craft stalls, a town crier competition, live music, a fun fair and those all important honey competitions. Always a friendly community event, many local charities and organisations participate and the town's churches join in with exhibitions.
‘Bee--‐sides’ the ever popular Cornwall Bee Keepers displays, with their live bees and honey products, there will be live music, street entertainment, the ever popular owl display, Children’s Art Competition (with over 800 entries), charity stalls and much, much more.
You can follow the trail of the Honey Fair Shop window displays, where the theme this year is ‘A Decade in our Queen’s Reign’.
It is not certain when Callington's Honey Fair was first established but in 1267, the town was granted a market charter by Henry III which gave permission for a weekly market and annual fair. Although towns in Wales have similar fairs dating back 700 years, it seems that the Callington Honey Fair was actually established in the latter half of the 19th century.

The festival starts at midnight on May Eve when townspeople gather outside the Golden Lion Inn to sing the "Night Song." By morning, the town has been dressed with greenery and flowers placed around the maypole. The excitement begins with the appearance of one of the 'Obby 'Osses. Male dancers cavort through the town dressed as one of two 'Obby 'Osses, the "Old" and the "Blue Ribbon" 'Obby 'Osses; as the name suggests, they are stylised kinds of horses. Prodded on by acolytes known as "Teasers," each wears a mask and black frame-hung cape under which they try to catch young maidens as they pass through the town. Throughout the day, the two parades, led by the "MC" in his top hat and decorated stick, followed by a band of accordions and drums, then the 'Oss and the Teaser, with a host of people, the "Mayers" - all singing the "Morning Song." - pass along the streets of the town. Finally, late in the evening, the two 'osses meet, at the maypole, before returning to their respective stables where the crowd sings of the 'Obby 'Oss death, until its resurrection the following May Eve.
Its always a great day with lots of atmosphere. Can you spot us?
